Obituary for Eric Swaine Thune
Eric Swaine Thune of Naples Florida passed away suddenly on December 9th, 2017, at the age of 57. Eric was born on January 3, 1960, in Chelsea, Massachusetts to John and Elizabeth Thune.
Eric is survived by his wife of 24 years, Lisa Thune, and 3 sons: Jason Thune, 29 of Hagerstown, Maryland, Nolan Thune, 20 of Naples, Florida and Kyle Thune, 17 of Naples, Florida. He is also survived by his brother, Lars Thune (Maureen) of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; his sister, Alison Cunard (Bruce) of Seattle, Washington; Mother-In-Law, Joan Maurais, and Brother and Sister-In-Law, Timothy and Mary Maurais, all of Naples, Florida. He also leaves behind 11 beloved nieces and nephews, and aunts and uncles. Eric was pre-deceased by his parents, John and Elizabeth Thune.
Eric grew up in Fairfax, Virginia. He was a recognized athlete from a very early age. He competed internationally in swimming and played varsity football as a freshman at Fairfax High School. Eric was an expert skier. His passion for skiing and helping people led him to join the volunteer National Ski Patrol in West Virginia where he served for close to 7 years. Eric and his family spent countless vacations skiing mountains all over the country and they would never miss an opportunity to visit their mountain house in Canaan Valley, WV, to bond on the slopes of Timberline.
Eric’s passion for football was lovingly passed on to his sons. They would spend countless hours cheering for their beloved Redskins, the US Naval Academy (his father’s alma mater) and the West Virginia University “Mountaineers” – where Eric attended college.
Eric was a gentle hearted, courageous fighter who never gave up. He was kind to everyone despite living in unbearable pain for years. He was a great listener with a smile for everyone. Eric’s greatest legacy will be his sons and his unwavering love for them. He put his sons above everything else and was a wonderful father. “Hero” is what they have always called him and a “hero” he shall remain. Eric will be deeply missed by many and will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace for eternity.
Memorial service is pending at this time.
