Obituary for Helmar Narath

Helmar Narath
On October 5, 2018, Helmar Narath of Naples, Florida passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He is the beloved husband of Erica Narath, devoted father to Pierre Narath and his partner Lynn Domenici, Kara Schemmel and her husband Hans, and loving grandfather of Jessica and Stephanie Narath and Lukas, Brooke and Serena Schemmel.

Helmar Narath was born in Berlin, Germany in 1936. His late parents Johanna and Bruno Bruckmann immigrated to the United States following World War II as part of the United States Government’s Operation Paperclip. His family which included his brother Albert and late sister Antje, settled in Cincinnati Ohio, where Helmar spent his youth and later earned his BA from the University of Cincinnati in 1959. After he completed his studies at the University of Cincinnati he joined the United States Army as an officer and was stationed in Germany where he met and married his first wife Lotte Narath from Nuremberg. He eventually retired from the United States Army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after serving in various posts throughout the United States, Germany and Vietnam. Helmar and his wife Lotte, along with their two children Pierre and Kara, settled in Massachusetts where he earned an MBA from Boston University. After his service in the Army he worked for the Gillette Company in their Braun division and spent the last 25 years with Connoisseurs Products before retiring at the age of 79. Helmar thoroughly enjoyed sales and had a tremendous knack for finding the latest gadgets and enjoyed sharing these with his family and friends.

At the age of 55, Helmar met his soon to be wife Erica and they married in Phoenix, Arizona in 1997. They enjoyed 27 amazing years together, sharing a passion for family, food, travel and golf. They lived in Ipswich, MA for 18 years where they were closely involved in the golf community. They hosted many family gatherings at their home and spent countless time with their grandchildren whom they cherished. After many years enduring the harsh and dark New England winters, they purchased a home in Naples, Florida where they enjoyed the active outdoor lifestyle, walks on the beach and indulged their passion for food. Helmar had a wonderful sense of humor and a tremendous zest for life. As his health deteriorated, he refused to give in, living every moment to its fullest with a big smile on his face. He will be deeply missed and remembered as a caring and compassionate husband, father and grandfather.
