Obituary for Kathryn "Kay" Johnson Light

Kathryn "Kay" Johnson Light
Kathryn (“Kay”) Johnson Light, 97, passed away peacefully on October 31 at home in Naples, Florida, surrounded by her loving family. Kathryn was born on October 18, 1921, in Crossett, Arkansas. She was the daughter of J. Herbert and Lillian Ladd Johnson, and the second of their five children. Her brothers Frank, William, and Jim and her sister Martha (“Sally”) all preceded her in death.

Kathryn was the valedictorian of her high school class and awarded a scholarship to the University of Arkansas at Monticello, then known as Arkansas A&M, which she attended for two years. She left school after the war started to work in Little Rock as an executive secretary at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. In Little Rock, she met her husband, Ralph Light, and they married in 1948. During the 60 years of their marriage, they raised three children and made many moves across the Midwest with Ralph’s work at IBM, settling at last in Indianapolis. In 1990, they made their final move to Naples, where Kathryn volunteered for several years at East Naples Methodist Church’s Bargain Nook. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, following local politics, and playing cards with family and friends. She had a quick wit and never lost her southern graciousness and sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Kathryn was a loving mother and grandma. She is survived by two daughters: Carol Light of Naples, Fl, and Judy Pence, of North Port, FL, and her son-in-law, Donald Pence, and daughter-in-law, Mary Light. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Jeff Pence (Lizbeth Chapa), Katy (Jim) Cloonan, David (Megan) Light, Dr. Susan Light (Dr. R.J. Roewe), Eve Light, and one great grandson: Oliver John Light. Her husband, Ralph Light, and son, John Light, died in 2009.

The family is not planning a service at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5020 Tamiami Trl N, #108, Naples, FL 34103 or online at
